The insurnace companies had closed their claims and for the most part did not pay them a nickel. Wayne didn't think that was fair. He got 1200 of those claims reopened and has settled all of them in favor of the insured. I think that sort of help is need in GVL. No up front cost and no cost at all to talk to either George or Wayne. Call Wayne 24/7 at 1-310-251-8091 or George M-F 9am to 5pm at 949-395-2855. I am older and like my sleep (George). The last two seasons I’ve launched a fishing boat and canoe and noticed I used them about 4 times the whole season. I’m looking to purchase the Cadillac of paddle boats and I thought it would be fun to co-own it with other cabin owners. The most important thing for us is that the boat is getting used as much as possible and not just sitting. NickName: Joann CommentsThis is in response to Pamela Jimenez's inquiry about Green Valley campground. Here is a phone number for more information: 909 867-2165. There is no electricity. From what I can tell on the Reserve USA Site, the campground opens May 11th. A 19ft trailer would fit and would need to backin to the site. There are water faucets and bathrooms, but no showers. Pricing starts at $20.00 + tax and - any discounts. I've camped there with a tent before and I noticed that there are a few non-reserve spaces, but I would never take a chance of getting up there without a resrvation. The pricing includes 1 vehicle and 1 legally towed vehicle and it's $5.00 for an extra vehicle. I saw that someone already has a reservation for the first week, so people do reserve way in advance. There are not alot of spaces, so I would suggest getting a reservation. Hope this helps!

When walking up our driveway on Dahlia, behind this cabin, I can hear that water is running somewhere in this house. There is not any run off outside, I am willing to bet that it is a toilet...does anybody know these people? I would hesitate to turn the water off from outside. The fellow across the street (with the Christmas music, I forgot his name) said the people only show occasionally and he does not have a number or name. NickName: Jason CommentsTo guests and fellow cabin owners of GVL. The last two times I’ve been up to GVL I’ve had very intermittent success with the mountain hot spot. Unfortunately both times I took Friday off and drove up to GVL expecting to be able to work using the hot spot in town. The signal is strong but intermittent. We had two computers trying to connect and both we experiencing the same problem. 30 second on, 30 seconds off, it’s hard to do much with the internet like that. I finally ordered high speed for our cabin after I learned my lesson. I appreciate those that installed the system at no expense to the consumer but it’s really too bad it doesn’t work. Take Care! The fishing is great, the lake is stoked frequently. We have a cabin there (for the last five years) and go up as often as possible. It is so quiet and such a great escape from the city, and only about a 1 1/2 hour drive. I know times are tough but there are some great real estate buys.

It is so strange that why people can't catch fish when the phone lines say they are constantly stocking the lake. There should be a lot of holdovers. My parents owned The Lodge Market for 4 years in the 60's(Frank & Connie Schroer). I spent MANY years in GVL. TONS of memories. I live in Texas now, but I'm going to CA in July to visit my mom. I am so glad you put up the info because the info line is still not up and running and I did not want to waste the gas or time if the lake wasn't stocked. Last year, they were really good at updating the information. By the way, Whitewater is another fish hatchery, just like Alpers so they probably aren't stocking since Alpers are put in. The state uses their own fish hatcheries so when you hear the State has stocked the lake it has been provided by the DFG. Have there been a lot of people fishing the lake lately? Take care, Rot8

Limit is 5, each fisherman must have their own stringer. Remember Cal fishing license is required. The General Store will have one and two day licenses but all year will have to be bought elsewhere. Please be advised - I do not fish and I hope that my answers are taken with a grain of salt - just trying to help out.

He has an unfortunate past he is believed to have been abused or possibly used as a bait dog. He was saved off of a euth list at our shelter here in Las Vegas. We worked to help this 3 month old (at the time of rescue) puppy trust again. It was clear how much he wanted to be loved. You will definitely need chains. We have driven on both 330 and 18 and have found that they keep 330 clear of snow and debris much better. You have more choices on your way to GVL such as the Deep Creek Drive In (great Mexican food), Blondie’s, Neo's Grinder (pizza) Toto's (Mexican) The Bus Stop (sandwiches, soups and coffee). All of these are located in Arrowbear and Running Springs. I commuted from GVL to San Bernardino for work for 15 years until I took a job that allows me to work from home. The drive is not too bad except when there is weather. If you enjoy a quiet community & nature, GVL would be a good choice. However, GVL is not convenient. What I mean is we are located 5 miles from the nearest gas station, 13 miles from the nearest supermarket, we get more snow than all of the other communities due to our high elevation, etc. I love living up here, but it is not for everyone. Do you have children? We raised our children here. However, it is not easy. All organized activities such as soccer, baseball, dance, etc. requires a drive of 20 to 45 minutes each way. However, they can go snow skiing through the elmentery school PTA program which takes place only 7 miles away (Snow Valley). If you are looking to be closer to the items previously listed you may consider Runing Springs, Lake Arrowhead or Lake Gregory.

We has Dan in GVL keep it overnight and not being able to find its owner (we asked everywhere we could think of) we brought it back to Los Angeles and placed it in a shelter in San Pedro. It was hungry when we found it, but not malnourished looking. It was very friendly with people, but not acclimated to dogs. If it's anyone's cat, please call us at 310 987 1654. We will pick it up from the shelter and bring it back to GVL the first chance we can (or call the San Pedro Los Angeles Animal Shelter at 735 Battery Street, San Pedro (888) 452-7381 directly and let them know it's your cat). We were just up for a couple of weeks in the Fall and I think it was Canary Kate who invited my mom. It was so wonderful - the whole town was invited. It was windy and gray and someone was playing bagpipes and some of the town dogs attended as well and struck up a chorus as soon as the bag pipes played. It was the best wedding I ever attended(that was someone else's). What a great place Green Valley is.

Many homes in the Green Valley Lake area are fully furnished second homes. Everyone has talked about rebuilding but that may take awhile. During that time if you own a second home in Green Valley Lake that you are willing to rent for minimal or no rent to a displaced resident please let me know. We were lucky and it missed us by 200 yards. My sympathy to those who have lost their places. Will be back up when we can and will lend a hand to those in need. We have spent many summers in Green Valley Lake. Dad used to own Bud and Doc's on Wildrose Drive. Now the cabin is painted God awful Green and is an eyesore. Dad sold out in early 90's, my Uncle is still an owner there for 40 yrs at Mama and Papa's on Lakeside and Yukon. I hear they were missed by the fire storm. I have been bringing my kids and Grandkids to fish at the pond and to enjoy life at the TOP. My many days with Gene Westmeyer, Joe Fox and sons the General store and BINGO at the ladies guild on Friday nights. Remember the Volly ball games and the new court to play on.... What a LIFE. My husband been going there since he was about 10. It was/is on Lupin street, which shows on the map there not sure if the homes burned or not. We almost bought Gerry Place, We looked at a few behind the main road. We ended of buying in boulder bay in big bear,but my heart always belonged to Green Valley. I hope Anna parker is OK, she was so nice to us. We will be there to help the Hohn's in anyway we can. Are prays go out to all in green valley and all the other places the fire has hurt.

Although a blog posted on KTLA.COM had an interview with Marvin Neville, who lives at the end of Angeles Dr and he is saying just about all on Angeles is gone. I e-mail Eric Spillman who posted the blog on KTLA.COM and he said things did not sound good for Angeles Dr but that a few homes where still there. Most of the pictures are now priceless. The log cabin that is in many of the pictures on the site was ours. We built it and had many wonderful memories there. Before building it we owned a smaller cabin across the street. Bob Becker, for whom this site is dedicated, was a dear friend of ours. All that remains is rubble. Looking at 32965 Canyon Drive, the house immediately to the right is gone. On Holcomb Creek Drive, the house between 33348 and 33362 is gone. Facing 33301 Holcomb Creek Drive, three houses directly to the left are gone. NickName: xmagnum CommentsIt seems that there is no info for GVL. I live in San Diego and the news regarding the Slide fire is nearly non-existent. We get L.A. Channel 5 for a few hours in the morning and evening. I saw a 5 to 6 minute piece they did with a reporter in GVL. The reporter was talking to some cranky old fireman that complained how the fire department ran away from the fire. I think the little time devoted to the story should have included more facts about what is going on in real time, maybe some pictures from a helicopter. Typical news reporting, focus on the controversy not the facts. Anyway, if anyone has any info on cabins on Squirrel Drive, please post here. I will be checking throughout the day. Thanks!!!

I only have left without my limit 1 time out of over 25 trips. The lake staff is great, the locals are always friendly! Myself and a great friend that has never been to GVL have actually chosen GVL campgroud for our vacation because of my experience's and of the great times and fishing I have had at GVL. We will be fishing early and late as I know these to be the best bite at GVL. Is their a possiblity of a special rate at the lake for campers? Are campfires (within the fire rings allowed at this time of year?) Both of us camping are experienced firefighters and will be bringing our own suppression extinguishers to assure that a campfire remains in control. We hope to enjoy the fishing, camping and friendly locals of GVL... Stop in and say Hi!

The weather, which affects lake temp has an affect on the fishing and the hatcheries don't lower their price based on the weather. I have been told that some lakes have canceled stocking deliveries due to high water temp. Our lake temperature can still sustain fish.

I am concerned about the content and name calling from the recent post about GVL Punks. I do not think this is the proper place to resolve the issues that some of the residents may have with other property owners in GVL. Several years ago I had my cabin broken into but had to accept the fact that things will happen that no matter what one does you can't prevent. One could bet it wasn't a "flatland weekender" that did it. It only takes one problem kid in the neighborhood to cause a lot of trouble for the whole place and all of the people that live there. NickName: Limited Time CommentsA bit curious. Given the small size of the lake, and given our experience in other lakes, I assume that GVL gets 'fished out' pretty quickly. I don't mean completely fished out. What I mean is that I assume the weekend right after stocking has really good bites and then after a few days, the bit tapers off dramatically, especially of larger fish. For example, I find that at Lake Gregory, the Mt. Lassen trout are quite aggressive and gets fished out very quickly. Can someone confirm this spike in production after stocking? Also, sometimes I have time to only swing by for 1 hour after work Would love to pay $5/hour but can't quite see paying $15 if I fish for an hour. Anyway to get this done? NickName: GVL LOCAL CommentsAfter talking to the lake manager, this is what I have been told. Because of the severity of the drought this year, we have not had the run off that we normally have. As the lake gets lower, the water gets warmer, and yes clarity has suffered. The lake contracts with a company called Marine Bio, who come in and treat the water as much as they can, without compromising fishing or swimming. At the same time, the manager takes a weekly sample of the water to a laboratory down the hill to be tested for safety. As for fish stocking, the total tonnage being stocked is the same or greater than last year. Adjustments to stocking schedule were made at the beginning of year, due to bringing in fish from Alper. Through the summer, the only 2 weeks without stocking are 2 out of the 5 weeks of August (which was posted in paper and on recorder) The last stocking will be after Labor Day,as usual. The manager does not spend his time on the internet. If anyone needs answers, the best avenue is to talk to him in person. He posts information to newspapers and on phone recorder

We also have had more heat than usual so the lake's temperature is higher than usual and things grow in warm water. I watched the water condition man checking the lake yesterday - our rec department is doing all they can to keep the lake healthy but it is not easy. We recieve fish from the government when they have them, we also buy fish from two sources. Most fisherman get their full stringer if they want to take their catch out of the water. Others catch and release for the exercise and sport of fishing. All we can hope for a nice rainy season with lots of snow.

There is about 1 foot of black muck on the bottom of the lake. Are the (promosed) weekly fish stocking curtailed because of this problem. Fish were not stocked last week. I have had the pleasure to work along side of Rod in making Green Valley Lake a great family get away for our stockholders and daily guests. Requesting the posting of the receipts we pay for fish implies you think we are being dishonest and deceiving. I think if we were not putting in the amount that is posted weekly at the boat house, we would never of gotten the high reviews from outdoor magazines / publications over the past several years. I believe there is a one day fishing license but it is not a good bargain if you plan on fishing more than one day. It was about $18.00 - 20.00 when I looked into it. The boat rentals were $5.00 per hour. You can total your cost from there. Have a good day.

I was so greatful to be able to finally see all the things he was talking about, all the cool "spots", where he would snowboard, and where friends lived. NickName: sphspirate42 CommentsI have 2 dogs that I often walk around the lake. The dogs have to be on a leash. They are not allowed in the swimming area (it is clearly fenced in). There is a dog swimming area near the boat rental building. As with other places, owners are expected to pick up after their dogs. Recently, I have even seen free dog bags near the volleyball area. I hope this info helps.

There is even an area to the right of the boat house where dogs are allowed to go in the water. Dogs are not allowed in the rental boats. Naturally, normal curtesies are expected such as picking up after pooch. Enjoy!

The trees are stressed due to lack of water which encourages pests to infest them such as the bark beetle. Most of the trees in the area are dying due to lack of water, not the bark beetle. All watercrafts must have a least one type-4 throwable personal floatation device (cushion type, U.S.Coast guard approved) in the boat. Rule 8: Children under nine years of age are required to wear a US Coastgraurd approved personal floatation device while on and around the watercraft and the boat dock. NickName: sphspirate42 CommentsThe Pacific Crest Trail is north of Green Valley. It is well marked. Look it up on the internet. Any of the dirt roads going out of Green Valley are also good for hiking. There are 2 that start at the Green Valley Campground. One goes to Big Bear, and the other used to go to Little Green Valley YMCA Camp. The camp isn't there, but the beautiful meadow is well worth the hike. Another trail I just recently found out about starts at the top of the Green Valley ski area. It goes east from there. I haven't been to the end of that trail, yet. I've enjoyed walking in this area for years.

Lake was stocked today with state fish so the lake is open and non-stockholders must pay to fish. Whitewater will no longer be stocking (they went out of business) but we will be buying fish from Mt Lassen and Alpers. They will be stocking on the 18th and 3 times a month from then on. Remember: you need a state license, no night fishing and no non-stockholder owned boats. Hope you all have a fun time.

NickName: Sue CommentsI am sitting here at 0300 reviewing the pictures of the house on Wild Rose Drive that just burned down. Being a lont-time night shift worker, I was easily awakened to a power outage, then heard a siren a minute later. I looked out my window in horror to see a home totally engulfed in flames. The fire department had a quick response. My prayer is, at this moment, no one was in the home. It is about 21 degrees and standing two doors from the fire it was about 90 degrees. When the pines caught fire they just roared like a freight train. If this was August 2, 2007 instead of March 2, 2007, I do not believe my house would still be standing, and I would have been running for my life. I will be attending the disaster preparedness meetings from now on -- I urge all full-timers to do the same.... What was so amazing was how deadly quiet it was, and everyone who was home on my end of the street seemed to sleep through it. I have pictures of the entire fire and the outstanding work our fire deoartment did. They are to be commended!!!!!

Some friends of ours came with us and we had a good time, despite our friends car breaking down on the way up to Big Bear. The mountains may have claimed this vehicle. It was great visiting and it snowed the morning after we got there. I have one little comment that I noticed in regards to the trash area. It seems that GVL is almost left out in the cold when it comes to Mountain Waste Disposal's service. I had to take my trash to the bins and then the day that I was leaving made another trip. However, when I got there, a gentleman was picking up trash bags and putting it into his MWD trash compactor that was no bigger than a regular pickup truck. He told me that from the day after Christmas to Saturday, which was more than 5 days, there would be no trash bins for the residents of GVL and you would have to travel nearly a half-hour up SR-18 to the dump site. Now, this may not be news to many locals but 5 days of holding onto trash can definitely make the trash pile up around town, on patios, porches, etc. Just a thought. However, I will share that the place was absolutely wonderful, we had a great time and will be returning again!<br> <br> Ecstatically thankful for a wonderful community to visit!<br> <br> Abe

NickName: Bird Brain CommentsOkay- so here's my weekender's opinion of the kid situation. I LOVE my place in GVL and I have been coming here since the 1970s. My grandparents and my father lived in the Big Bear area in the 40s and 50s. A couple of things I have learned over the years- make friends with the local kids and they will most likely not bother your property. Irritate them, and when you are not present, they may have their way with your place. For me- so far, so good. It is my opinion that most of us keep our property in good condition. A few do like to "keep things" (garbage, particularly), and we would all like to appeal to those folks to clean it up. The pack-rats are certainly not the majority, though. But if you prefer the manicured "O.C. at 7500 Feet", then perhaps Arrowhead (a little lower) is a better choice for you. I LOVE GVL!!!

It's funny because I've been checking out this site for the last week and almost left a comment here yesterday... and then I come back today and see that the home owner graciously allowing us to spend time at his cabin did the same, yesterday, as well. Well, we'll be visiting and looking forward to having fun, whethere it's a White Christmas or not, we'll be enjoying a good time away. A White Christmas would make it much better, though. In all honesty, I've thought that if I could, I would own a home and spend time in GVL. I'm a man that loves the outdoors and I'm sure my kids and wife would too, although she needs an urban scene to keep her sanity. I can't wait until we're there, it's two days away and counting. I'm excited and anxious and can't wait to be there. I'm looking forward to it and will definitely visit again to let you all know how we enjoyed it. Anxious Abe

Since I am a weekender that doesn't get up to the top as often as I would like It was of great concern to hear about junk, trash and especially Break-ins. My cabin was broke into a few years ago and caused considerable damage to the door frame. Those of us that own property in GVL and support the local town there but are only there on weekends solely rely on the good people that live there year round to watch our property. For that I am sure all the weekends are Very much apprecative. For the good of all GVL rummors and reputations about the lack of a safe and crime free community is more costly than we can imagine. This Christmas I have some friends that will be visiting my place and hope they have a wonderful white Christmas without and concern of any so called wild kids. Most of all I would not like their special time to be disrupted by finding that my place has been broken into again. Please protect our special GVL

We were amazed at the tracks we found in the snow Sunday morning. I grow to love Green Valley Lake a little more with each trip. NickName: Mike CommentsI hate to harp on these kids but i also had a recent run in. I recently bought a cabin. A month ago we were sitting in the living room and three kids- about 15 years old ran around the cabin banging on the windows- curtains were shut. It freaked us out!! I chased them up Meadow Ln and 30 minutes later they were back, yelling profanities at us. As a new cabin owner this is not something i'm going to tolerate. I called the sheriffs. The sherrifs were not happy to be in town but these kids need to learn. The sherrifs spent the evening in GVL and left at 3am. The following nights we had no problems so i'm assuming something happened. If anyone knows who they are please deliver a message that we will not tolerate such behaviour. I can fully relate to being bored but banging on someones windows is a bit over the top. Please report any disturbances you have to the sherrifs office. On another note, GVL is a great community filled with very nice residents.. Anyone who says otherwise hasn't spent enough time there. MU

There is another group in GVL that needs the commitment and participation of our community members and that is the newly reorganized CDP (Citizens for disaster Preparedness). In the event of a disaster or emergency GVL may need to rely of ourselves for a couple of days. It is easy for us to get cut off from the world. The CDP is currently organizing neighborhood zones, accessing medical needs of our community, drawing up a disaster manual and making sure we have the resource available to take care of ourselves. The next meeting is Tuesday Dec 7th at 7:00pm at the Firehouse. Please come.

I met some Rednecks there; they were proud of the name as it was not considered a stereotype, but more like a culture. I wanted to be one for awhile just to fit in, but it wasn't to be. I simply didn't have what it takes. I don't see any Rednecks in GVL. I am offended by that comment in a different manner, because I had good friends that were "true Rednecks." I only saw a few punks vandalizing good people's property. Therefore, punks are youngins who haven't any respect for their elders. Punks are everywhere. It is not a stereotype, but a judgement on character. As for the neighborhood watch being a joke; well, I know for a fact that my street is "watched" by at least 5 different people who will handle it in there own little way. Let it snow and take care.

I called the city of San Bernardino and complained. They came out and cited them. They were forced to hire someone to clean it up. Have chased some kids off a neighbor's property- A special concern in our beautiful community is the way some folks let their properties go- these are residents, by the way, not abandoned or unused cabins. Some places just look terrible- trash, appliances, abandoned cars in yards, etc. Anything we can do about it? I'm watching my property value go downhill, and it really affects the enjoyment. Having pigs for neighbors sure can ruin a weekend...

Is this the case, the lake doesn't seem to have too much movement prohibiting ice to form (but that might be different in winter time). I'd imagine the ice would get thick enough in winter time to skate on, or am I sadly mistaken (thought it would be a great place to do a little iceskating, which I haven't done for years). It only took about 30 min more to get to my cabin in Green Valley. As usual, the weather is great. I'm writing this note at the Running Springs Library. It's great and it's free! Try it.

NickName: Mike CommentsJim, In response to your questions we bought our cabin about this time last year. We come up about 2 times a month. Approx. monthly costs for us are Electric $25.00, Gas $15.00, Water $40.00, CSA 79 Sewer Fee $50.00, Trash $11.00. For average cabin costs check out www.realtor.com and type in zip code 92341. There are a lot of properties for sale right now, and a lot of them have had the prices reduced. I would say it is more of a buyers market in this area right now as there are many properties for sale. Some properties for sale now were for sale last year when we bought ours. From what I've been told there are no termites, and I didn't see any when we remodeled our cabin. The 35 year old wood studs looked like they were brand new when we opened the walls. We had mice in the cabin twice, but that was when it was under construction. Since the cabin was properly sealed the rodents have not returned. As far as mold goes you'll probably have mold wherever you've had excessive water intrusion. If there is no water intrusion there will be no mold. Our cabin was refinished on the outside before we bought it so I don't know how often you have to do that. How exposed you cabin is to the weather will definitely play a part in how often you have to re-finish it. When we bought the place the first thing we did was put on a new 30 year asphalt shingle roof. I was told it wouldn't last 30 years. I'll be happy if I get 10 years out of it. I hope this helps. It is what I have noticed since being a cabin owner for a year. The full timers will probably have some better answers for you as they know the area better. I can say that this is a great place to be at, and I am glad we bought the cabin.

Highway 330 To Be Closed Completely For Two Weeks Thursday, August 3, 2006 Caltrans has made the decision to close Highway 330 between City Creek Road and Highland Avenue beginning Monday, August 7. Contractors will remove the entire upbound lane of the Highway where heavy erosion has destabilized the slope and roadway. Because of the danger associated with the work, no vehicles will be permitted through the area. Caltrans officials hope to have the slope restored enough by Monday, August 21 to allow escorts through the area. If all goes well, escorts will be conducted from 8 AM through 6 PM through Labor Day Weekend. After Labor Day, the escort window will be reduced to mornings from 5:30 AM through 8:30 AM and evenings from 5:30 PM through 8:30 PM. The after Labor Day escort hours may be extended on Sundays, if the contractor is able to accommodate the additional hours. Announcements regarding Sunday escorts will be made on Fridays. During the closure, Caltrans recommends the following detours: Crestline, Lake Arrowhead, and Running Springs — take SR-30 to SR-18 (Waterman Avenue) and go north. Big Bear and Fawnskin — take I-10 to Redlands and exit at Orange Street. From eastbound I-10 exit, go to second signal and turn left on Orange St. Travel about one mile to Lugonia Ave. and turn right. Lugonia Ave. and Orange Street are SR-38. Continue on SR-38 uphill to Big Bear and Fawnskin. This schedule has changed multiple times — including three times within the past two weeks. It is likely that this schedule will change again. Turning off the water is something that everyone should be do everytime they leave for their home more than 24 hours. Our water is pure and should stay that way!!!! Getting ready for the winter takes only a few minutes and our family likes to spend some time in the snow. The price of homes (cabins) will not fall so this is a good time to buy. I am so happy that I insisted that we buy when we did. I would do the same now (but I would be 7 years younger!) hope to meet you someday. I am sure that any of the many realtors can give you a map of the area. Prices are higher but they are still worth looking at. I found this wonderful Valley when I wanted to make sure that my two young grandboys had the chance to go camping. Two years camping at the end of the road I was tired of sleeping on the ground so I insisted that we find a cabin so that I could have a comfortable bed and still have the boys be in this nice place. Since my parents flew in from Ohio they used our equiptment which meant 1 stringer. The lake attendant gave us the same speech about 5 fish per stringer. It really make no sense to me except the CALIFORNIA RULE: When in California make as many rules as possible to make everything unenjoyable and allow yourself to be IN CHARGE! Being in the military and moving a lot I have never experienced this type of ignorance in any other state. IF I PAY FOR 3 PEOPLE THAT EQUALS 15 FISH. THE $15 IS PLENTY TO COVER THE 15 FISH NO MATTER WHO CATCHES THEM STOP TRYING TO JUSTIFY IT!

Since the Dept. of Fish and Game stock the lake (in addition to it being stocked by the stockholders) the lake is subject to DFG rules...Just like any other lake in California....Thus the 5 fish limit.

My oldest son drove out here from Hunnington Beach for this trip. We were having alot of fun fishing until the gentleman that tends the lake and collects the money asked us how many fish we had. I told him the 3 of us had 12 fish. He told us that 2 of us had to quit fishing and that it was up to him to decide which one of us could catch the remaining 3 fish. We just packed up and left. It looks great and with spring in full bloom, the trees were all so green and the pines looked exceptionally healthy. there has been thinning of the dead pine trees over the past couple of years, but still could use more of it it my view deeper into the forest. GVL is truely one of the hidden gems of San Bernadino Nat'l Forest! ps, a very nice restroom has been completed just behind the boat dock house.

There is a public campground 2 miles from the lake. On weekends, reservations are suggested. Inflatables are not allowed on the lake. Other privately owned boats must have licenses. A California fishing license is reuired, plus there is a daily fee (3.00?) for each person fishing. These is a 5 fish/person/day limit, but no weight fees. I haven't fished for about 7 years, so if any of this info is incorrect, someone please correct me. Green Valley Lake is a great place to spend a day, weekend, or week!

Sean - I was hoping that someone else would answer you because I am not that sure that my answer is really correct but here goes. The pipes that are used for tie-up belong to boat owners and it is not nice to use another person's pipe. (Although it does happen all the time!) So start out right by digging in your own pipe. The recreation center will not open for a few weeks but if you have sent in your money for the passes there will be no problem. BTY you do need a fishing license in addition to the fishing pass.

Asking someone in Green Valley is good, I look at the Big Bear Solar Observatory cam. It gives a very good picture on how much snow is on the ground. There are also web cams at the ski areas. I was there last weekend. There was 3 inches on the ground. By Saturday, chains weren't necessary. Yes, it does sound like more snow this weekend. From what I was told and have read they will have a truck there on weekends only, and you better have your account # or a copy of your bill with you or they may not take your trash. Your home address will not be sufficient. I was also told that trash service was a "county mandated program" and I could not discontinue the trash service even if I wasn't going to use it. The way the trash service was set up before I totally agree with charging everyone, however with a new policy like this I'm not sure how they can charge you for something that you may not use. They gave me a phone number to the county if I wanted to find out more about the county mandated program. The number was 909-386-8701. Being one who usually leaves on a Monday or Tuesday I imagine that I am going to find this to be a real hassle. The last time I left town I saw four trash bags on the side of the road just after passing the lake. It is unfortunate, but I am sure we will see more of this as who wants to haul smelly trash home in the trunk of their car.

If you come up on a holiday or during the week you have to take your trash home with you. I tried to complain to the trash co. to at least have trash drop off on holiday's since so many people come up. They said they would note my complaint. As of Tuesday morning I heard that it was only 10% contained, had burned about 400 acres, and was approximately 2 miles south of Running Springs. I also heard Running Springs was under a voluntary evacuation. You never know if the news we get down below the mountain is correct or not.

It automatically goes on every Thursday to charge the battery, and I don't notice it unless I'm outside or right inside the room that it's outside of. Barricade is a gel you can purchase online. You hook it to your garden hose and spray your house if a fire is close. It keeps it from burning. YOu can also safely spray it on the vegetation around your house. It has a shelf life of 5 years. After you spray it, I think it'll last for 3 days, I'm not positive. You rejuvenate by misting it lightly with water. My husband is a local contractor in GVL. R.W. Roberts Construction. The firemen used it (or something like it) during the Old Fire on Rim Forest Lumber Yard, the building, the lumber, everything, and they didn't lose a thing. However, the warner cable building, which didn't use it, burned down.

The previous owner installed a 208v (I think it is pretty much 240, if i am not mistaken) right into our elec panel. So i just turn off the main breaker and plug the generator in... So, i looks like i will be in the generator market real soon. What brand and what size (kw's) did you go with ? Thanks again !
NickName: gvler Commentsduring the Old Fire, Edison informed us that in high wind conditions, where there was a high fire danger, they would arbitrarily shut down the power for however long they deemed it necessary. The fire also took out some lines. Most of us lost quite a lot of food in our freezers and fridges. While the power was out, and after we had all been told to leave, the temperature took an unexpected drop. Everyone left so fast (and at that time the temperature was average for late summer) no one thought to turn off their water. We honestly didn't think we'd be gone that long. Anyway, a lot of people's pipes froze and burst. Luckily, Rick Mull from the water company stayed in town with the fireman, and he ran around like crazy filling request for water shut-offs that we sent him over the internet. Right before we were evacuated, but after Edison shut the power down, we went down to Home Depot to get a generator. They were overwhelmed with requests and completely sold out. WE had to have someone bring us one from Las Vegas. Aside from the problems because of the fire, yes...we have several outages during the winter...and summer, and fall. A generator is a wise investment for up here. We went whole hog and got a stand-by. Hooks us to the natural gas, and kicks on automatically when the power goes down. It has more than paid for itself as far as I'm concerned. I hated having cords strung out around the house connecting the fridge, heater, lights and TV. Had to do that the Christmas after the fire when the storm took out the power. So yeah, go get a generator. You'll thank yourself later...

I still go to Y Camp as a Director now (at Camp WHittle, and Camp Round Meadow). I know the camp is plowed under, and form what I understand, ony the foundation of one bldg was left. This would have been a one-time mistake if the girl hadn't gone on the website and wailed to everyone how Geri mistreated her. And actually, she brought up the fact that she was out of town by pointing out that she was used to more elaborate handicap markings. The sign is the appropriate size, and posted directly in front of the parking spot, at eye level. This is a small town, it's a small business, and Geri can't afford to repaint the typical handicap markings every year (as she would have to because the snowplows remove it every year.) Since that letter came out, several people have deliberately parked there, and been very rude to Geri if she said anything. All she did was ask the girl if she would move so her handicapped customer wouldn't have to park across the street, but the girl had to make a big deal out of it. And now apparently everyone else is. Parking is very limited here. Geri has 3 parking spaces. Naturally she is going to want to secure what little parking she has for her customers. A large number of them are handicapped. I just felt it was unfair that everyone seemed to take a stranger's word for the incident, and rather than ask Geri for her side of the story, immediately started treating her rudely. I'm sorry if you think I've blown this all out of proportion, but I thought Geri's side should be heard. She is NOT the parking patrol, she's just trying to make a living, and she happens to be your neighbor. She deserves a little respect, that's all.

Have you considered that the truth of the matter is that someone parked in handicap for a short period of time and was confronted by the parking patrol. no big deal and no one died. How about trying to come up with a solution (blue handicap stiping, better visible signage per county code) instead of complaining about the past. I own property in GVL and come up quite often and enjoy the local hospitaliy.I have not run into anyone who holds it against myself for not being a full time resident (flatlander as you call it). She is a local businesswoman and works here, the least you could have done is get her side of the story. That "poor sweet kid" drove up to her shop in a truck. The handicap sign was in the window in a direct line of sight with the driver. There were 2 other signs that said "Geri's parking only". Come on folks, she only has 3 parking places as it is and one's for her. She went outside and asked the girl if she'd seen the sign, and the girl argued. Geri said she had a handicapped customer due any moment (who was at that moment parking across the street and had to walk over. She has difficulty walking, period.)THe girl kept arguing so Geri told her she'd taken down her license # and went in the shop. The girl came back later and thrust her drivers license in her face, and said it wasn't her car so here was her license #. Geri said, "I didn't write your # down" Then the GIRL blew up and started yelling at Geri...in her shop...in front of her customers. Excuse me, but that would irritate ME. It seems that since her letter came out, a number of you have deliberately parked in her place just to bug her. One guy, after Geri pointed out the sign, said "so call the cops!" Really. I think there are a few of you who owe her an apology or at least a chance to hear her side of the story. (I got a little irritated today when I went to my hair appointment and someone going elsewhere was parked in front of her shop so I had to park by the lake.) But some people are ignoring the empty parking places in front of the market and parking at Geris'. Give her a break, would you? Or do a flatlanders comments carry more weight than a locals?

We've scouted out three scenic areas no more than 100 miles from L.A. that offer good buys. By Ann Brenoff Times Staff Writer July 31, 2005 The American dream of owning your own home seems to be morphing into owning two: Last year, one out of every three houses sold was a second or vacation home. But with the real estate market being hot, hot, hot, the question on a lot of minds is: If you haven't already jumped into the vacation-home lake, is it too late? Is it possible to find someplace you'd actually want to park your pillow — campers, you may stop reading here — that is still relatively affordable and within weekend-driving range of Los Angeles? The short answer is yes. Typically, these aren't fancy digs; they're funky cabins in the mountains or small-ish condos near the beach. But they are not without their charms. Like the 1932 mountain cabin in Green Valley Lake that has a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace and is surrounded by a national forest. Asking price, with furnishings: $229,500. OK, so the floor slopes and you might want to take down the mounted deer's head and antlers. But it is unquestionably a suitable pied-à-terre for hunkering down with your sweetie while the snow piles up outside the door. Or would you consider a mobile home? What if it came with a full-on, unobstructed ocean view, like the triple-wide in the spiffed-up mobile home park in Oxnard that recently sold for $525,000? Makes you wonder what else is flying below the radar, doesn't it? The Times visited three areas within about 100 miles of downtown Los Angeles and found vacation properties for sale in each for about $300,000. For fatter wallets, of course, the selection widens. So, where were some of the best deals? At the beach, we liked up-and-coming Oxnard — but its prices are up-and-going out of the affordability range. And in the mountains, the simplicity of Green Valley Lake — and the number of properties in the $300,000s — was pretty alluring. In the desert, the least expensive property listed was a condo in Palm Springs for $83,500 that might have suited some of those campers we dismissed earlier. But alas, even that just went into escrow. The beach Located on the coast midway between Malibu and Santa Barbara, Oxnard was, until recently, a place where time stood still. But shopping centers have sprouted where empty lots once stood and SUVs now appear to outnumber pickup trucks. There's even a trendy new gym in the Harbor Landing shopping center. Though the wide, sandy beaches of this city of 17,000 year-round residents may have been a secret even three years ago, current real estate prices suggest that the cat is out of the bag. But don't be scared. A marina-front, 670-square-foot, one-bedroom condo in Oxnard was recently listed for $335,000 in a complex with three pools, two tennis courts, a gym and a clubhouse. The median price of a beach-area home in the 93035 ZIP Code is $580,000, up almost 150% from five years ago. In the neighborhoods popular for second homes — those nestled between the beach and the harbor — a two-bedroom condo with a sliver of a view is fetching almost $600,000. But rising prices aside, water-seekers may find Oxnard and its neighbor Port Hueneme to be relative bargains compared with Los Angeles beach-area prices. In Port Hueneme, home to a military base and many American flags, a 988-square-foot condo with two bedrooms and an ocean view is listed for $439,000. Oxnard prides itself on being unpretentious, a place where flip-flops are de rigueur at all times — no small feat when there are $3-million listings on the sand that have neighbors a Grey Poupon reach away. John Stuart, who calls himself a "Bakersfield refugee," bought a 900-square-foot condo in Oxnard three years ago, thinking that his children and grandchildren "might want to come in out of the heat once in a while." Come they did, and they often brought friends. After a year, Stuart and his wife sold that first condo and moved up to a newer, bigger one. Their four-story, 2,500-square-foot unit has been outfitted with enough sofa beds to sleep 14. "Nobody said comfortably," Stuart adds. But his "weekends" have now stretched from Thursday to Monday and he's spending plenty of time with his grandchildren. "We're just laid-back, that's what Oxnard is," said Susan O'Brien, a real estate agent with Young Realtors. As she speaks, two bicyclists — bikes are the transportation mode of choice here — pass a cement mixer involved in transforming yet another beach shack into a castle. Still, Oxnard's allure is unmistakable. Maybe it's the wind-swept sand that finds its way to the streets along Ocean Drive, frustrating even the most devoted gardeners and sending them to the cactus nursery in defeat. Or maybe it's because an evening out means watching a seal chase its supper in the harbor. There is just something so un-L.A. about catching the sunset at the local watering hole, not knowing whether the guy on the stool next to you is a fisherman from town or a fancy lawyer from the city. The desert When people talk about "Arnold" here, they generally mean Palmer, not Schwarzenegger. For many, the Coachella Valley's 120 golf courses are the draw. Others come for the arid beauty, good air quality and climate. If melting in the desert heat with a golf club in your hand appeals, pick a persona, because each desert community seems to work hard at cultivating one. The martini-lunch-at-the-country-club crowd gravitates to Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells (which is a greener Rancho Mirage without the shopping). Palm Springs, of course, has the lock on history and the lure of dead celebrities' homes. Monte Stettin, who splits his time between homes in Beverly Hills and Palm Springs, is a desert convert. He reluctantly went to the desert six years ago to care for his ill life partner but quickly became smitten by the ease of life. He traded his career as a Hollywood screenwriter for one as a desert real estate developer. "There is a magnetic stillness about these mountains," Stettin said. "It's hard to explain." Easier to explain is the lure of being able to move around on roads that aren't gridlocked or catching an art-house movie without waiting in line. Stettin also prefers the historic feel of Palm Springs to its cousins up the road. Palm Springs, once synonymous with Hollywood royalty, is now a haven for gays and lesbians. It has an openly gay mayor and hosts the annual Easter weekend-long White Party fest and the Dinah Shore Weekend lesbian dance party. Palm Springs has become known for art galleries, one-of-a-kind shops and midcentury homes. On the low end, a 589-square-foot condo near the laundry and with a view of the complex pool just listed at $139,000. Ruth and Phil Elwell, who owned the popular King's Head Pub in Santa Monica for three decades before selling it this month, bought their 3,100-square-foot Rancho Mirage home four years ago for about $360,000 — now nicely appreciated to $800,000. "I just love it," said Ruth Elwell. "I find the tension lifts just as soon as we hit the windmills on the freeway." Rancho Mirage is known as the "playground to the presidents" because so many of them have had vacation homes here. Former President Ford still has an estate at the Thunderbird Country Club — the same gated complex that inspired an auto executive to name a car after it. The centerpiece of the "new" Rancho Mirage is the River, a 30-acre plot of upscale boutiques, galleries, theaters and restaurants. But just up the road stands the landmark Rancho Super Car Wash's famous pink elephant, whose trunk "squirts" water in untrendy defiance. Real estate agent Marilyn Bauer of Dyson & Dyson Real Estate Associates estimates that 80% of Rancho Mirage is made up of gated complexes. Prices of available units in this city of 15,500 range from a two-bedroom condo for $250,000 to an 8-acre estate listed at $8.9 million. Neighboring Indian Wells prides itself on its greenness. Golf shares top billing here with tennis; the Pacific Life Open, one of the world's most prestigious tennis events, is played in the 16,000-seat Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Recently listed in the Indian Wells Country Club was a 3,445-square-foot home with three bedrooms and three baths for $1.25 million. The home has a private pool, 14-foot ceilings and an open floor plan. If your piggybank doesn't have enough quarters, there's also a 1,865-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath condo in the same gated complex listed for $499,000. The unit fronts a private courtyard and shares a pool with about a dozen other units. Residency buys you discounted play at two hotel golf courses in Indian Wells. Don't forget to bring water. The mountains As Jerry Seinfeld might say, Green Valley Lake is about nothing. The bustle of Lake Arrowhead is a mountainous 30-minute drive away for shopping, dining out and movies. There isn't even a gas station. Bring a book; it's good for you. Green Valley Lake is about four miles off Route 18 with one road in and out; the only things along the way are three church camps. To which solitude seekers will probably say, hallelujah. There are a handful of businesses across from the lake and a few cabin rentals. Many homes back up to the pristine San Bernardino National Forest. Largely untouched by the bark beetle that infested much of the Lake Arrowhead area, the foresty smell of the tall pine and cedar trees permeates the area. As the name suggests, there is a lake in which swimming, kayaking and fishing are allowed, but not motorized water sports. This is a "make your own fun" kind of place. That, or drive to it. Moving a little closer to civilization is Lake Arrowhead and its environs, where prices are largely determined by whether a property has lake rights. The lake in Lake Arrowhead is private and use is restricted to those whose properties provide access. Properties with access command higher prices and pay an annual fee, much like a homeowners' association fee. Realtor Andrea Lassak of Coldwell Banker Sky Ridge in Lake Arrowhead, who has been selling properties in the area for almost 25 years, says the first question she asks clients is: "Water, or not?" "If they want lake rights" — a boat dock, a beach, ability to water ski, fish — "the prices are higher," Lassak said. But if the lake doesn't matter, a lot of people don't want to pay for something they won't be using." Farley Neun was one who didn't care about the lake. He was pleased four months ago to find his two-story, 1,200-square-foot cabin with a view in Running Springs — a mere 90-minute drive from his home in Echo Park. For $130,000, Neun said, "it felt like a steal, compared to L.A. prices." The cabin, without question a fixer-upper, is quiet and remote-feeling, but the small town of Running Springs is just a 10-minute walk away and the Snow Summit ski area a mere 17-mile drive. Many year-round residents who work in Lake Arrowhead live in Running Springs. A recent check of properties found the least expensive unit without lake rights to be an A-frame with a floor-to-ceiling rock fireplace listed at $159,000, in Arrowbear. It's on a small lot, has two bedrooms and a three-quarter bath. By comparison, the least expensive home with lake rights was listed at $257,000. It has two bedrooms and 1 1/2 baths. There are about a dozen properties with lake rights under $300,000. For the outdoorsy set, bliss may be found in the San Jacinto Mountains village of Idyllwild. Winter brings snow on the pine trees and cozy in-cabin time. A three-bedroom home with a rock fireplace and view from the loft was recently listed for $309,000. There is fishing, biking and hundreds of miles of wilderness trails for hiking. We love to come up there and get away for the weeking we have even spent hundred dollor weekends in the cabins. And we really save to do this stuff. We were camping and in the morning went to make breakfast and the copper tubing was missing for the stove. I drove down to the local store parked went in they sent me to the hard ware store I ran over there and they said to get the stove. I ran back to the car and a woman from the beauty parlor yelled at the top of her lungs at me. I never looked at her store as i pulled up i assumed it was the same building. I also never saw she posted a handicap sign. There were absoluty no makeings on the ground so I just pulled in. I went to pull out after crying and appoligizing and two men in a green fire department truck blocked me in I was so scared. I was truely sorry i even went back to her shop and appoligized again and even to give a copy of my drivers liecence. She asked if i was from down the hill, i said yes . and she said that figures. I Do NOT break the law, our handicap spaces are marked differentally down here, and ussually special spaces are on a sidewalk or a post directlly in front of the parking space. I am truely sorry , but will always remember this trip to green valley. I would probally go to big bear or Fawnskin in the future. I am only writing because i really felt bad and that old woman was so mean. As well as sterotyping me and blocking me in the space. One of those men were young and working for the fire department. I used to love going to the Saturday Night dances at the Fire House when I was a teen. What a cool community. What is available as far as computer connections in GVL? NickName: GrandmaB CommentsIf your recent gas bill only reflects one month of base line charges you are being cheated. You are entiltled to 2.950 times each day you use gas. Those estimated bills we received in to winter did NOT estimate our base line up to the maximun. Check your bills for Dec thur April, each month (if you had your gas on) should have reflected a paymont for baseline. If you did not pay your baseline (they did not ask for it) you are now being asked to pay a very high price for over base line for the months that you used gas at base line and were not charged for it. My first call to the Gas Company I did not have my eggs in the basket. But after my first call I did check the last 7 months of my bills and the second call I started my conversation with the question of "what is the calculation of baseline", try it. Hope this helps!!

NickName: mtnfancier CommentsWe have a futon for sale. Twin bed on top and a double bed on the bottom that folds up to a sofa. The top mattress is your basic twin mattress. The bottom mattress has a black cover. The frame is black tubular steel. It's in nice shape, practically new. It would be perfect where space is tight yet you want a place for guests. I'd recommend a double featherbed on top of the lower bed as the mattress isn't as thick and cushy as a regular mattress. Asking $75. Email if you are interested. Re: crime -- there is a Neighborhood Watch Program. We have traded phone numbers with our neighbors. We check their places when we go hope aned trust they do the same when they go up. We haven't had any problems.

NickName: Shelby's Mom CommentsWent up to GVL, and back, yesterday. places on south side still have LOTS of snow...which is why I came back the same day. Lake is clear, but weather was cold. Even driving out of GVL, the mountains across the way show the dark green of the trees and white ground. Seems more like Dec than almost mid-April. New "disposal" system seems okay, but have my doubts when summer comes. I'll be walking Shelby in GVL again, but not until the sun does a lot more work.
NickName: danmar dogz CommentsI am posting this for my friend. In the past few days, they were on vacation and staying at Green Valley Lake. They had with them 3 dogs. While the dogs were playing outside their cabin, one disappeared. This was a beautiful Sheltie named Susie. A Sheltie looks like a small version of Lassie. She had tags on her but no one has called to attempt to return her. These people stayed an extra 5 days trying to find her and they are devastated. Today a whole bunch of flyers will be posted all over town to try to have people help to locate her. If you have any information as to her whereabouts, please call the number on the flyers or feel free to call me at 805-208-2875. Susie's owners are heartbroken. There is a large reward for her return. Thank you for any help! We've got to find her. Please help!

I am on the shady side of the lake and still have some snow around me. But there is no ice and the air is warm and has the smell of SPRING.
